Donato Dozzy builds his new album around the first record he ever owned Astro Robot Contatto Ypsylon

Astro, out via Tresor Records on November 20th, traces back to a dubbed Italian cartoon theme from Dozzy’s childhood – and marks the first time he’s ever sampled a track for his own music.

In the late 1970s and into the ’80s, Italian kids – Dozzy among them – grew up on a wave of Japanese cartoons dubbed into Italian, each with its own specially written Italian theme song pressed onto a 7″. The robots in those cartoons – giant Jumbo Machinders, piloted by their human characters on adventures out past the solar system – kicked off two lifelong habits: collecting vinyl and collecting the figurines themselves, both still kept at home today in careful, tended collections.

In 2025, Dozzy went back to the very first of those theme songs he ever owned – “Astro Robot Contatto Ypsylon” – and sampled it, the first time he’s directly sampled a track for his own work. The resulting piece, “Astro,” became the title track and the spark for an entire new record. On the album, Dozzy pilots his own mighty machine, an EMS Synthi AKS, the way those cartoon characters once piloted theirs – music and synthesis running alongside childhood memory rather than against it.

Astro is a double LP, Dozzy’s next release for Tresor, arriving from an artist who otherwise moves between DJ sets, classical collaborations, museum installations and his own label Spazio Disponibile without settling into any one of them for long.

Title track “Astro” is out now on Bandcamp and streaming platforms. The album is out November 20th, alongside a short documentary.
