Berlin-based duo Modeselektor announce new album & share ‘AORTA’

Modeselektor return with ‘MDSLKTR’, a new album built from old ideas, strange sounds and the things left behind when you stop trying to make everything make sense. First up is ‘AORTA’, the track that became the artery running through the whole thing.

Across twelve tracks, ‘MDSLKTR’ finds Modeselektor rummaging through three decades of their own history and seeing what’s still worth keeping. Old sessions, unfinished ideas and forgotten sounds become raw material, while collaborators including KABEAUSHÉ, SIRIUSMO, MISS PLATNUM, TOMMY CASH, LARS EIDINGER and GUDRUN GUT drop into the mix.

‘AORTA’ is the first thing to emerge from the record — a track the duo describe as the “main artery” everything else had to flow through. It’s also a useful introduction to the album’s approach: less adding, more taking away; less polishing, more finding out what’s actually there.

The record follows ‘Modeselektor Classics Vol. 01’, which sent Bronsert and Szary back to sessions from the ‘Hello Mom!’ and ‘Happy Birthday!’ era. This time, though, the point isn’t to recreate the past. Back in their Berlin studios, the duo began pulling apart old ideas and rebuilding them into something that could exist now.

Johannes Wagner aka J.Manuel joined the studio team as co-producer and writer, while somewhere in the process a Yamaha DX7 became the unlikely star of the show. According to the duo, the album was made entirely with the synth’s 32 algorithms, “a lot of bad temper”, and no samples, modular systems or computers. The vocals were even recorded through the DX7 — which is difficult, given that the DX7 is not, technically speaking, a vocal microphone.
