A welcome return for Ammonite, the project of songwriter-producer Amy Spencer on clay…

THE AMMONITE’S SURFACING

The Ammonite curled on the cold ocean floor,
In a shell shaped like time, with a hush at its core,
It gathered some echoes, and plenty of stone,
And hummed a slow song in a language its own.

“O So,” said the shell, “shall we rise with the tide,
Past the anglerfish choirs and the coral divide?
I’ve slumbered since mornings were young and unmade,
But the Surface is calling — so, why be afraid?”

It spun through the dark on a current of chime,
Unwinding its spiral in three-quarter time,
Till it broke through the water in glittering rings,
Opened its mouth just a crack — and it sings.

clay. closes out its debut compilation with something that unwinds… “So” is the closing track on Surface 01. Spencer’s debut mini-album Blueprints landed on Ransom Note Records back in 2024, followed by the Salamanda remix of “When You Don’t” and the Blueprints Revisited package featuring a David Holmes rework. Same voice-first approach here, this time closing someone else’s record instead of opening her own.

clay. presents Surface 01, a VA compilation bringing together 15 artists, established and emerging, making what the label considers some of the most exciting electronic music right now — a testament to the countless forms of leftfield dance music coming out of the UK and beyond, and a small taste of what’s to come. “Ammonite – So” is the atmospheric conclusion to the 13-track record, brimming with emotive textures and crystalline vocals.

Surface 01 is out 25th September via clay., mastered by Lurka (Dave N.A. handling “Pancake Parade” himself), with cover artwork by Selina Landis — a 3D print with pewter inlay, hand-finished and digitally edited.
